Aegidius Romanus

Theologian and political theorist. Born in Rome, he joined the Augustinian Order and attended lectures by Thomas Aquinas at the University of Paris. Although some of his theories were influenced by Thomas, he did not belong to the Thomistic school. After clashing with the university authorities and interrupting his studies for several years, he became a professor at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Paris, where he taught until he became superior general in 1292. He supported Thomas's position on the distinction between "being" and "essence" in finite things, and elevated this distinction to an existential distinction that exists "between things."

神学者，政治理論家。ローマで生まれ，アウグスティヌス修道会に入り，パリ大学ではトマス･アクイナスの講義に出席。その学説の一部にトマスの影響が認められるが，トマス学派には属さない。大学当局と衝突して数年間修学を中断して後，パリ大学神学部教授となり，1292年修道会総長になるまで教える。彼は有限的事物における〈存在〉と〈本質〉の区別を説いたトマスの立場を支持し，この区別を〈物と物との間〉に存在する実在的区別にまで高めた。
