Oriental History

Japanese: 東洋史学 - とうようしがく

A field of historical research and education in Japan. It forms a specialized field in academic societies and university courses alongside Japanese history (national history) and Western history. In Korea, Oriental history, which includes Japanese history, coexists with Korean history and Western history. Japan, which has been greatly influenced and benefited from Chinese civilization, has made knowledge of Chinese history a part of its education since early times, and people have become familiar with many Chinese historical documents. This has led to the transcription and excerpting of valuable historical texts, as well as interpretations of the texts and explanations of various systems, and many of these results are of great benefit to research today.

日本における歴史研究および歴史教育上の一分野。日本史(国史)学，西洋史学と並立して学会や大学の課程での専門分野を形成する。なお，韓国では，韓国史学，西洋史学とともに，日本史を含む東洋史学が並立する。中国文明の多大の影響と恩恵を受けてきた日本では，早くから中国史の知識を教養の一部とし，多くの中国史籍に親しんできた。そこから価値ある史書の書抄･翻刻が行われ，またその文章読解や諸制度の解説などがなされ，その成果は今日の研究を利するものが少なくない。
