…This was the heyday of court poetry, when regulated verse developed as a well-balanced, elegant, and gorgeous form of poetry suitable for recitation at the court. Wang Bo and Yang Xiong were instrumental in perfecting the five-character regulated verse, while Song Zhiwen and Shen Xinqi perfected the seven-character regulated verse. Poems written at the command of the emperor at official court events, called responsive verse, were generally written in regulated or paili verse, while poems written as subjects for the imperial examination, called poetry anthology, were limited to paili verse. During the height of the Tang Dynasty, regulated verse came to be used in many areas, such as lyricism and landscape description, but Du Fu in particular brought out the rich possibilities of the seven-character regulated verse, and it is even said that Du Fu was the true perfector of it. …
