1876‐1969 Honduran soldier and politician. A conservative military leader, he became president in 1932 and ruled as a dictator for a long time until 1949. He severely suppressed popular movements, causing unrest in the military towards the end of his rule. Although he lost the presidential election in 1948 to a rival candidate from the Liberal Party, he continued to lead the National Party and wielded great influence in politics until 1954.
