Harald Cramér

1893‐1985
Swedish mathematician. Born in Stockholm, he studied at Stockholm University. He began his research career there as an assistant in biochemistry, but soon switched to mathematics. He devoted himself to research in analytic number theory in his early years, becoming adept at Fourier integral techniques. The content of his doctoral thesis published in 1917 was also about Dirichlet series. From 1920, he worked for an insurance company as an actuary, which led to his interest in probability theory, and he began to publish some excellent research on the central limit theorem.

スウェーデンの数学者。ストックホルムに生まれ，ストックホルム大学に学ぶ。そこで生化学の助手として研究生活をスタートさせたが，すぐに数学に転向してしまった。初期のころは解析数論の研究に励み，フーリエ積分の手法に長ずることとなった。1917年刊行の学位論文の内容もディリクレ級数に関するものである。20年からしばらく保険数理士として保険会社に職を得，そのため確率論に興味をもつようになり，中心極限定理について優れた研究を発表するようになった。
