Badlands

The plateau is located in the southwestern part of South Dakota, in the southeast of the Black Hills, in the Cheyenne and White River basins, covering an area of 5,200 ^km2 . The dry climate and lack of vegetation has led to severe erosion, resulting in a barren landscape with deep valleys and steep ridges. The term "badlands" was first used here to describe this type of terrain. It is famous for the abundance of fossils of reptiles, birds, and mammals dating back to the Mesozoic era.

アメリカ合衆国，サウスダコタ州南西部の高原。ブラックヒルズ (山地) の南東方，シャイアン川とホワイト川の流域約 5200km²の地域。乾燥気候で植生に乏しいため浸食作用が激しく働き，深い谷とけわしい尾根の入組んだ不毛の地。こうした地形をさすバッドランド (悪地地形) という語は，ここで初めて使用された。中生代以後の爬虫類，鳥類，哺乳類などの化石が多いことで有名。
