In the Edo period, if the head of a family (called a "name person") in the Buddhist sect family register was under 15 or a woman, he or she needed an adult male guardian, known as a "daiban-in." This was generally a relative, but could also be a servant. In the second half of the 18th century, with the spread of the retirement system and the increase in kakeyashiki (rented houses), the number of underage heirs increased, and so did the number of daiban-in. Documents submitted to the feudal lord must be signed and stamped by the daiban-in along with the underage name person. [Inui Hiromi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
