Paderewski

Japanese: パデレフスキ
Paderewski
Polish pianist, composer, and politician. Born in Kliłówka, Ukraine. After studying piano at the Warsaw Conservatory, he studied composition in Berlin. After making his debut in Vienna in 1887, he toured the world, and was particularly renowned for his performances of Chopin's works. During World War I, he participated in the Polish independence movement, and founded the Polish National Committee in Paris with R. Dmowski (1864-1939). He was active as its representative in Washington and elsewhere, and in 1919 he became the first Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Poland, but resigned at the end of the same year. He resumed performing in 1922. After the outbreak of World War II, he traveled to the United States, and died in New York while appealing for aid for Poland. He left behind many piano pieces, as well as works such as the Piano Concerto (1888) and Symphony (1909). The so-called Paderewski edition of the Complete Chopin Works (published 1949-1961), which he began editing in 1937, is also widely known. → Rubinstein
