When steel is deformed in tension, plastic deformation begins when the elastic limit is exceeded, and some materials then elongate within a certain range under a nearly constant stress. This elongation is called the yield point elongation, but if a material that has exceeded its elastic limit is unloaded and then immediately deformed again, the yield point does not appear. However, if the material is unloaded and left at room temperature for a long period of time, or held at a slightly higher temperature, and then loaded again, the yield point will appear again. 鋼を引張変形させていく場合,弾性限度を超えたところで塑性変形が始まり,その後,ある範囲でほぼ応力一定のもとで伸びを生じるものがある。この伸びを降伏点伸びと呼ぶが,一度弾性限度を超えた材料を除荷した後,ただちに再び変形を与えても降伏点は現れない。ところが,除荷して長時間室温に放置するか,やや高い温度に保持したのち荷重を加えると再び降伏点を生じる。これをひずみ時効という。ひずみ時効後は強度が増加し,延性が減少する。
