Also called alkyl halides. A general term for compounds in which one hydrogen atom of an alkane (an aliphatic chain saturated hydrocarbon) has been replaced with a halogen (fluorine F, chlorine Cl, bromine Br, or iodine I). It is generally represented by the formula CnH2n + 1X . An example is CH3CH2Cl , and the nomenclature is chloroethane for halogen-substituted alkanes, or ethyl chloride for alkyl halide compounds.
