Theodore Harold Maiman

American physicist and inventor of the laser. Born in Los Angeles. Influenced by his father, an electrical engineer, he became interested in science and graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Colorado. He went on to study microwave spectroscopy at Stanford University and obtained a PhD in physics. He invented the laser in 1960 while working at the Hughes Research Center. Since A.H. Schawlow and CH Townes pointed out in 1958 that optical masers were possible, researchers have been competing to make them a reality.

アメリカの物理学者で，レーザーの発明者。ロサンゼルスで生まれた。電気技術者であった父の影響から科学に興味をもち，コロラド大学電気工学科を卒業した。さらにスタンフォード大学でマイクロ波分光を研究し物理学の博士号を取得した。ヒューズ研究所に勤務中の1960年にレーザーを発明した。1958年にショーローA.H.SchawlowとタウンズC.H.Townesが光メーザーが可能であることを指摘して以来，その実現を目ざして研究者たちが競っていた。
