A Vienna-born art historian, he is known as an authority on iconography. He studied art history at the University of Vienna, but moved to England during the Nazi era, and later served as a professor at the University of London and director of the Warburg Institute. During that time he was a visiting professor at universities in the UK and the US, and a member of the British Academy. When dealing with issues of style in his art history research, he established a unique methodology that made use of the findings of modern perceptual psychology. His major works include "The History of Art" (1950), "Art and Illusion" (1960), "Contemplation on a Wooden Horse" (1963), and " The Sense of Order" (1979). [Toru Kashima] "Decorative Arts, by E. H.
