Gombrich - Sir Ernst Hans Josef Gombrich

A Vienna-born art historian, he is known as an authority on iconography. He studied art history at the University of Vienna, but moved to England during the Nazi era, and later served as a professor at the University of London and director of the Warburg Institute. During that time he was a visiting professor at universities in the UK and the US, and a member of the British Academy. When dealing with issues of style in his art history research, he established a unique methodology that made use of the findings of modern perceptual psychology. His major works include "The History of Art" (1950), "Art and Illusion" (1960), "Contemplation on a Wooden Horse" (1963), and " The Sense of Order" (1979).

ウィーン生まれの美術史学者。図像学の権威として知られる。ウィーン大学で美術史を学んだが、ナチスの時代にイギリスに渡り、のちロンドン大学教授、ウォーバーグ（ワールブルク）研究所所長などを務める。その間、英米の各地の大学で客員教授を歴任、英国アカデミー会員であった。美術史研究において様式の問題を扱う際、現代の知覚心理学の成果を生かして独特な方法論を打ち立てた。主著に『美術の歩み』（1950）、『芸術と幻影』（1960）、『木馬に托(たく)しての思索』（1963）、『The Sense of Order（装飾芸術論）』（1979）など。
