Vaṭṭakera (English spelling)

Japanese: バッタケーラ（英語表記）Vaṭṭakera

A scholar of the Jain Kue sect (naturist sect). His birth and death dates are unknown, but he is believed to have been before the Kundakuda period (5th to 6th century). The Kue sect denied the authority of the Byakue sect scriptures and compiled a new scripture in vernacular language consisting of four sections: ancient texts, cosmological texts, philosophical (doctrinal compendium), and ritual (monastic) texts. Bhattakera contributed to the establishment of the new scriptures as the compiler of the two books in the last section, the Moolacara and the Trivarnacara.

ジャイナ教空衣（くうえ）派(裸行派)の学僧。生没年代は不詳だが，クンダクンダ(5～6世紀)より前とみられる。空衣派は白衣（びやくえ）派聖典の権威を否定し，新たに古伝書，宇宙論書，哲学(教理綱要)書，および儀礼(修道論)書の4部門からなる聖典を俗語で編纂したが，バッタケーラはこのうち最後の部門に含まれる《ムーラーチャーラ》と《トリバルナーチャーラ》の2書の編纂者として，新たな聖典の成立に貢献した人物である。
