A village in Ama County, western Aichi Prefecture. Population 4,732 (1995). Located at the southern end of the Nobi Plain, it occupies the west bank of the Nikko River estuary, which flows into Ise Bay. The area was reclaimed from the end of the 17th century for over a century, and rice, vegetables, and flowers are cultivated there, with goldfish farming also thriving. The area sustained serious damage from the Ise Bay Typhoon in 1959, but the Meisho National Highway (National Highway 23) was opened in 1963, and a lumber port with a lumber yard was built, which led to industrialization. Factories such as paper, electricity, and shipbuilding have moved into the surrounding lumber industrial complex, and the area has developed into a commercial and industrial area adjacent to Nagoya City.
