The Igbo people are an ethnic group living in southeastern Nigeria. They have an estimated population of about 20 million. They speak Igbo, a Kwa language belonging to the Niger-Congo family. Members of a patrilineal lineage form homesteads, which are grouped together to form villages. Village politics and religion are decided by the chief in consultation with a council of elders. The largest political organization was a village association of about 5,000 people, but they did not form a nation. They have a well-developed hierarchy that strengthens the political unity of the villages. They live by slash-and-burn agriculture, cultivating yams and cassava. They believe in a creator god and many other spirits and gods, but many educated people are Christians. The Biafran War of 1967-70, in which the Igbo sought independence, resulted in 2 million casualties.
