Glastonbury

A town in the Mendip region of the northeastern Somerset County in southwest England, England. It is located about 35 km south-southwest of Bristol, on the slope of a hill overlooking the valley of the River Blue. It is a small town engaged in dairy farming, sheepskin processing, and sheepskin product manufacturing. The remains of a late Iron Age lakeside settlement have been excavated from the remains of an old peat bog nearby, along with various artefacts, and the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, the oldest Benedictine abbey in England, are also nearby, making it a bustling tourist centre. At nearby Worthy Farm, the Glastonbury Festival, an outdoor music festival, is held every summer. Population: 8,784 (2001).

イギリス，イングランド南西部，サマセット県北東部，メンディップ地区の町。ブリストルの南南西約 35km，ブルー川河谷に臨む丘の斜面に位置する。酪農のほか，羊皮加工，羊皮製品製造などを行なう小都市であるが，付近の古い泥炭地跡から種々の出土品とともに，鉄器時代後期の湖上集落遺跡が発掘されており，またイングランド最古といわれるベネディクト会の聖メアリー修道院の遺跡も近くにあり，観光中心地としてにぎわう。近郊のワーシーファームでは，毎年夏に野外音楽祭のグラストンベリー・フェスティバルが行なわれる。人口 8784（2001）。
