Battani - Battani

One of the greatest Islamic astronomers. His Latin name was Albategnius. He was born in Harran, Mesopotamia. He wrote many books, including a commentary on K. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos , but his main works are De scientia stellarum (De scientia stellarum), which includes a star catalogue translated into Latin, and De numeris stellarum et motibus (De numeris stellarum et motibus), which influenced the Renaissance. In these two books, he wrote about his many observations since 877, his compilation of a star catalogue in 880, his highly accurate calculation of various astronomical coefficients, and his discovery of the apogee of the sun. He also gave an outline of trigonometry for such astronomical calculations, in which not only sine but also tangent and cotangent are officially used.

イスラム最大の天文学者の1人。ラテン名はアルバテグニウスAlbategnius。メソポタミアのハラン出身。K・プトレマイオスの『四書』Tetrabiblosの注釈書も含め多数の著書があるが、その主著は、ラテン語訳のある星表のついた『星の知識について』De scientia stellarumと、ルネサンスまで影響を及ぼした『星の数と運動について』De numeris stellarum et motibusである。この2書に、彼が877年以来多数の観測を行ったこと、880年に星表を編集し、天文学上の種々な係数を非常に精確にしたこと、太陽の遠地点運動を発見したことなどを書いている。また、そうした天文計算のための三角法の概要が記述されているが、そこでは単に正弦だけでなく正接と余接も正式に使用されている。
