Choju Giga - Choju Giga

Japanese:
Choju Giga - Choju Giga
A picture scroll from the late Heian to the early Kamakura period. It consists of four volumes, A, B, C, and D. It is owned by Kozan-ji Temple in Kyoto. It is a white painting using only skillful ink lines, some thick and some thin. Volume 1 is a masterpiece that depicts small animals playing like people. Volume 2 is a pictorial depiction of animals' ecology, and is second only to Volume 1 in quality. Volume 3 depicts people playing a game in the first half, and the second half has the same theme as Volume 1, but the brushwork and quality are inferior. Volume 4 has a similar theme to the first half of Volume 3, but is more roughly and exaggeratedly humorous. It is said to be the work of Toba Sojo (Kakuyu), but there is no certainty. Not all volumes are drawn by the same hand, and there is a considerable range in the techniques and production dates, so it is thought that they were drawn by a painter associated with a temple, using the line drawing skills he had acquired while transferring Buddhist iconography.
