A former town in Sawa District, southeastern Gunma Prefecture. It occupies the western edge of the Omama alluvial fan at the southern foot of Mount Akagi. Rice farming, sericulture, livestock farming and greenhouse horticulture are also thriving. As transportation has improved, industrial parks have been developed and many companies have moved in. A group of ancient tombs, including Chausuyama Tomb, are found in the western half of the town. In January 2005, it was incorporated into Isesaki City along with Sakai Town and Higashi Village in Sawa District. 24.38 km2 . Population 17,661 (2003). 群馬県南東部,佐波(さわ)郡の旧町。赤城山南麓,大間々(おおまま)扇状地の西端を占める。米作,養蚕を行い,畜産,施設園芸も盛ん。運輸の発達とともに工業団地の造成が進み,多くの企業が進出している。町の西半部には茶臼山古墳などの古墳群が分布。2005年1月佐波郡境町,東村と伊勢崎市へ編入。24.38km2。1万7661人(2003)。
