It is difficult to determine which deity was the chief of the Baltic pantheon, but in the past it was often thought to have been Perkūnas (ri), the thunder god, but recent research suggests that it was Dievas (ri) (Dievs (ra), Deiwas (pu)). As an ordinary noun, this name simply means "god," but originally it meant "sky," and in folk songs he appears as the "god of the sky."
