A solitary ascidian belonging to the order Wallacea, class Uricha, and family Piura. It is a large cold-water species with a body length of about 10 cm, occasionally exceeding 20 cm. Its body is long and cylindrical, reddish-orange in color, and its rear end attaches to rocks and reefs. Its outer skin is thin and leathery, and although its surface is smooth, it feels rough to the touch due to the dense growth of tiny spines. Its fascia is thick and can be eaten raw. It is found in the northern Sea of Japan, along the coasts of Hokkaido and the Kuril Islands, through the Sea of Okhotsk and Bering Sea, and up to Puget Sound in Washington State, USA, where it lives in depths of less than 200 meters. A species very similar to this species, the sea peach ( H. pyriformis) , is known to live in the cold waters of the North Atlantic.
