A bay in the south of the Orkney Islands, northeast of Scotland. It is bounded by the main island of Pomona and the island of Hoy, and is 24 km long, 13 km wide, and has an area of 125 km2. It is a strategic point in the waters connecting the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. In June 1914, Admiral John Rushworth Jellicoe (1859-1935) selected it as the base for the British Grand Fleet, and it was used during World War I. In 1918, the German fleet was sent here after its surrender, but it refused to be handed over to the Allies, and most of its ships were scuttled here in June 1919.
