A city in the central part of Fukui Prefecture, in the southern part of the Fukui Plain. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. The central city area was established as a temple town for the Seishoji Temple, and developed as the residence of the Manabe clan. It is one of the centers of Fukui's textile industry, producing silk, rayon, and synthetic textiles, and is a specialty of eyeglass frames, accounting for about 90% of the national production. Kawada in the east produces lacquerware. The city is connected by the Hokuriku Main Line, the Fukui Railway Line, and the Hokuriku Expressway. In 1995, the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships were held, the first time in Asia, and new sports facilities were built. 84.59 km2 .
