A mechanism for exchanging information such as user information and access history between web browsers and web servers. It was developed by Netscape Communications in the US, and is supported by various web browsers. When a page is accessed, the web server writes the domain name, path, expiration date, and other information to be applied to the HTTP extension header called Set-Cookie and sends it to the browser. The browser saves the contents of that header as a text file on the local hard disk, and sends the cookie to the web server the next time the site is visited. The contents of the cookie can be referenced by CGI or JavaScript, so it is possible to rewrite pages or switch the pages to be sent depending on the parameters (values). It is also possible to set the web browser not to accept cookies sent from the server.

ユーザー情報やアクセス履歴などの情報をWebブラウザーとWebサーバー間でやり取りするための仕組み。米ネットスケープ・コミュニケーションズによって開発され、各種Webブラウザーが対応している。ページへのアクセスが行なわれると、WebサーバーはSet-CookieというHTTP拡張ヘッダに適用するドメイン名、パス、有効期限などの内容を書いてブラウザーに送信する。ブラウザー側はそのヘッダの内容をローカルのハードディスクにテキストファイルで保存しておき、次回そのサイトを訪れたときにはWebサーバー側にそのCookieを送信する。Cookieの内容はCGIやJavaScriptで参照できるため、パラメータ（値）に応じてページを書き換えたり、送信するページを切り替えるといったことが可能だ。なお、Webブラウザー側では、サーバーからのCookieの送信を受け入れないように設定することもできる。
