The 88th night

One of the miscellaneous festivals in the calendar. It is the 88th day from the beginning of spring, which corresponds to around May 2nd in the solar calendar. According to popular belief, Shibukawa Harumi (Yasui Harumi) decided to include it in the calendar when he reformed the calendar in the Jokyo era, but it has already been included in the Ise calendar since 1656 (Meireki 2). Around May 2nd in the solar calendar, it is only a few days until the beginning of summer, but there is a chance of frost, known as the "88th night of parting frost," which can cause great damage to newly sprouted crops, so it was included in the calendar to warn farmers.

暦の雑節の一つ。立春から数えて88日目をいい、太陽暦の5月2日ごろにあたる。俗説によると、渋川春海(しぶかわはるみ)（保井春海(やすいはるみ)）が貞享(じょうきょう)改暦で暦に載せることにしたといわれているが、1656年（明暦2）以来の伊勢暦(いせごよみ)にすでに記載されている。太陽暦の5月2日ごろといえば、あと数日で暦のうえでは立夏であるが、「八十八夜のわかれ霜」というように、霜の降りることもあり、新芽を出した農作物に大きな被害を与えることがあるところから、農家に注意を促すため暦に記載されるものである。
