In the narrow sense, lace made by knotting threads includes bobbin lace (also called pillow lace), in which threads attached to bobbins are pinned onto a base (a pillow) to make lace, and needle point lace, in which thread is attached to the outline of a design to create a frame and the inside is sewn with a sewing needle, raising the thread. Other types of lace include tatting lace, which is made by tying knots with thread wound around a small shuttle; filet lace, which is made in the same way as weaving fishing nets with fishing needles and rulers; hairpin lace, which is made with a U-shaped tool and a crochet hook; tenerife lace, which is made by inserting a pin into a circular cushion and sewing thread through it (a style that originated in Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands); crochet lace, which is made with a crochet hook; knitting lace, which is made with knitting needles; and macramé, which is tied without tools. Lace made from fabric includes cut work, in which a part of the fabric is cut out after first applying a stitch to prevent fraying; drawn fabric work (also called open work), in which the fabric is pulled with thread to make holes; and drawn work, in which some of the warp or weft threads are pulled out and sewn. *Some of the terminology that mentions "tenerife lace" is listed below.
