The Dutch War of Independence from the Spanish monarchy lasted from 1568 to 1648. It began with protests by William I of Orange, Count Egmont and other high-ranking nobles against the tyranny and oppression of Protestantism by King Philip II of Spain, and eventually lower-ranking nobles and Calvinists came together. Around 1568, they broke out in open rebellion, and after the Union of Utrecht was formed, they declared independence in 1581. The fighting continued under the command of William of Orange and his surviving son Maurice, and they achieved effective independence in 1609. The Dutch Republic was officially recognized by the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. It was one phase of the Thirty Years' War. → Related topics Duke of Alba | House of Orange-Nassau | Beggars' Brigade | Religious Wars | Groningen Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
