Japanese: 楯状地 - たてじょうち

A region where Precambrian bedrock is exposed over a wide area, forming a topography resembling a shield. It is also called a shield. It exists in the center of a stable ancient continent, and since the Paleozoic era, the only crustal movement has been gentle uplift and subsidence. In addition to the Canadian Shield, the Angara Shield (northeastern Eurasia), and the Baltic Shield, shields in Africa, Australia, and northeastern South America are well known.

先カンブリア時代の基盤岩が広大な面積に露出し，楯を伏せたような地形をしている地域。シールドとも。安定した古期大陸の中心部に存在し，古生代以降，地殻の運動としては穏やかな隆起・沈降だけがみられる。カナダ楯状地，アンガラ楯状地（ユーラシア大陸北東部），バルト楯状地のほかアフリカ，オーストラリア，南米北東部の楯状地などが知られている。
