Princess Shoshi. The fifth daughter of Emperor Toba. Her mother was Bifukumon'in. In 1146 (Kyuan 2), she became the third empress, and in 1157 (Hogen 2), she became a nun and took the posthumous Buddhist name Kongokan. In 1161 (Oho 1), she was given the title of Hachijo-in. She was favored by her parents, and was given a vast estate, which gave her great influence as the estate of Hachijo-in. She adopted Princess Shoshi, the daughter of Emperor Gotoba, as her son, and this estate was passed down to the Emperor. She devoted the latter half of her life to praying for the souls of her parents. Her grave is in Narutaki, Kyoto City.
