The papal palace in the Vatican City in Rome. It has been the permanent residence of the Pope since 1377, when Pope Gregory IX returned to Rome from Avignon. Pope Nicholas V began work on the cathedral in 1450, and successive popes have expanded it ever since. Many famous architects and artists, including Bramante, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bernini, participated in the expansion and renovation work, particularly from the time of Pope Sixtus IV. Including the courtyard, the palace has an area of 44,000 m2 . There are 1,400 auxiliary chapels and rooms of various sizes. The pope lives in only a small part of it, and most of it is used as an art museum, library, etc. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
