Appian Way - Appian Way (English spelling)

An ancient Roman national road. It was named after the censor Appius Claudius Caecus, whose construction began in 312 BC. It was completed from Rome to Capua in the 4th century BC, and extended to Brundisium (now Brindisi) in southern Italy by the middle of the 3rd century BC. It is 540 km long. Known as the "Queen of Roads," it connected to the Via Egnatia (built around 130 BC, crossing the Balkan Peninsula) across the Adriatic Sea, and played a major role in the exchange between Rome and the Greek world of southern Italy and the Balkan Peninsula. Even today, parts of the road and historical sites along the road can be seen, and in the vicinity of Rome it is one of the important historical sites known as the Via Appia Antica.
