The term is derived from the French word syndicat, which means labor union. In a broad sense, it refers to the labor union movement in general, but in a narrow sense, it is often used to refer to movements and ideas with anarcho-syndicalist tendencies. Syndicalism emerged in France and Italy in the late 19th century and early 20th century, and the Amiens Charter adopted by the French General Confederation of Labor (CGT) in 1906 is considered to be a central expression of revolutionary syndicalism.
