A deciduous shrub of the Caprifoliaceae family. It grows in mountainous areas near the coast of the Pacific coast of central Honshu. It is almost hairless, with thick, glossy, opposite leaves that are broadly elliptical with pointed tips and sawtoothed edges. In May and June, numerous flowers bloom in the axils of new shoots, starting out white and gradually turning reddish purple. The corolla is about 2.5 cm in diameter, bell-shaped and funnel-shaped, with five lobes at the tip and a rapidly tapering tube. The fruit ripens brown in autumn, splitting to release winged seeds. It is widely planted as a hedge and as a windbreaker, as it is resistant to sea breezes. The closely related Deutzia japonica has soft, non-glossy leaves and a gradually tapering tube of the corolla. It grows mainly in mountainous areas with a Pacific climate. Deutzia japonica grows at the foot of Mt. Fuji, is hairy overall, and the flowers are purple-red from the beginning. The Japanese laurel tree has thin leaves with dense white hairs on the underside and red flowers. It grows in mountainous areas with a climate on the Sea of Japan side. All varieties are used as garden plants.
