A military commander in the late Muromachi period. The eldest son of Hatakeyama Mochikuni, the shogunate regent of the Muromachi shogunate. His first name was Yoshinatsu. Mochikuni had no legitimate biological children, so he tried to make his younger brother Mochitomi the successor to the family headship, and also adopted Mochitomi's son Masanaga. However, in 1450 (Houtoku 2), he handed over the family headship to Yoshinari, who was born to a concubine, and the Hatakeyama clan split into the Mochikuni/Yoshinari faction and the powerful vassals who supported Masanaga, and they repeatedly fought, involving local lords, mainly in their domain of Kawachi. Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, Hosokawa Katsumoto, and Yamana Mochitoyo (Sozen) supported Masanaga, so in 64 (Kansho 5), Masanaga became Kanrei and inherited the family headship. However, Yoshinari soon gained the support of Sozen, who was in conflict with Katsumoto, and succeeded in dismissing Masanaga in 67 (Onin 1). However, war broke out between Masanaga, who was supported by Katsumoto, and this developed into the Onin War. The conflict between the two Hatakeyama factions continued even after the war, and Yoshinari fought battles that involved local lords in Kawachi Yamato and Minamiyamashiro. He died on January 12, 12th year of Entoku.
