Hatakeyama Mitsuie

Japanese:
Hatakeyama Mitsuie

A military commander in the Muromachi period. Son of Motokuni. Owari no Kami, Uemon no Suke, and Saemon no Kami. In 1399 (Oei 6), he was promoted to the rank of Jugo no Jo, but was shunned by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and even though he made a distinguished contribution by pursuing and killing Ouchi Yoshihiro during the Oei War, he was still not forgiven. After the death of his father Motokuni in 1406, his younger brother Mitsuyoshi inherited the family headship, and Mitsuie became the shugo of four provinces: Kawachi, Kii, Ecchu, and Noto. However, after Yoshimitsu's death in 1408, he was handed over the family headship by Mitsuyoshi, and became the governor of three provinces, excluding Noto, and also the governor of a sub-county in Yamato's Uchi district. He was appointed Kanrei twice, from 10 to 12 and from 21 to 29 (Eikyō 1), under Shogun Yoshimochi and Yoshikazu, and in his later years he also became the governor of Yamashiro. When it came to the issue of succession after Yoshimochi's death, he famously drew lots with Sanpoin Monzeki Mansai and others at Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine to decide on Shoren-in Gien (Yoshinori). In the Kennaiki, it is said that Mitsuie was poor at reading and writing and could not understand kanji phrases, so he had to speak in Japanese to make it easier to understand. He died on September 19, 5th year of the Eikyou era. His posthumous name was Shinkanjidono Naomoto Dotan.
