An ocean current that flows from east to west in the equatorial waters north of about 20° south latitude. This current is generated by the southeasterly trade winds, and its northern boundary is at about 3° north latitude, crossing the equator, because the trade wind belt is somewhat asymmetrical with respect to the equator. Directly below this current flows the eastward equatorial undercurrent.
