...After Sheikh Mubarak ascended to the throne in a palace coup in 1896, the country increasingly leaned towards Britain, and in 1899 it signed a treaty making it a British protectorate.

In 1950, Sheikh Abdullah, known as the "father of modernization," ascended to the throne, and in 1961 Kuwait gained independence after the country's protectorate with Britain was dissolved. At the same time as independence, Iraq, which claimed to be the successor to the Ottoman dynasty, claimed ownership of Kuwait and sent troops to the border, but this was provisionally resolved by the dispatch of Arab League troops, and the country joined the United Nations.
