Koshu Road

Japanese: 甲州道中 - こうしゅうどうちゅう

Also known as the Koshu Kaido. One of the five main roads of the Edo period. In the narrow sense, it refers to the route from Edo Nihonbashi to Kofu via Naito Shinjuku, but officially it extends to Shimo-Suwa where it joins the Nakasendo. There are various theories on how to count the number of post stations, but the usual number is 44. The traffic volume was relatively low, but since Koshu was a Shogunate territory, it was important from a military standpoint. It corresponds to the current National Route 20 (Tokyo to Shiojiri City).

甲州街道とも。江戸時代の五街道の一つ。狭義では江戸日本橋から内藤新宿を経て甲府までをいうが，公式にはさらに中山道に合する下諏訪までをさし，この場合宿数は数え方で諸説あるが普通44宿。交通量は比較的少なかったが，甲州が天領であったため軍事的見地から重視された。現在の国道20号線（東京〜塩尻市）に当たる。
