Swan song (English: Swan song)

Swan song (English: Swan song)

This is one of Schubert's three great song cycles, along with "The Beautiful Mill Girl" and "Winterreise." However, while the previous two are song cycles with a consistent content, this song cycle is a collection of 14 songs (seven to poems by Rellstab, six by Heine, and one by Seidl) that Schubert composed in 1828, the last year of his life, and was published after his death by the Vienna publisher Haslinger. Therefore, it is not a song collection compiled by Schubert himself, and "Swan Song" (meaning "Farewell Song") is a title given by the publisher later. Although it lacks consistency as a song collection, many of the individual songs are masterpieces that clearly reflect various aspects of Schubert's mind in his later years. Some of his compositions, such as the famous "Serenade" Ständchen based on a poem by Rellstab, and "The Dove's Messenger" based on a poem by Seidl, are centered on lyrical melodies, while others, such as "The Shadow" based on a poem by Heine, delve deeply into the psychological aspects of the lyrics through recital-like singing and unique harmonies. In particular, Heine's poems, which Schubert first encountered in the year of his death, inspired him to open up new horizons in song expression, as can be seen in the piano introduction to "The City" (Die Stadt).
