Meinecke - Friedrich Meinecke

Meinecke - Friedrich Meinecke

German historian. Born in Salzwedel, a small city in Prussia. When his father, a postmaster, was transferred, his family moved to Berlin. He entered the University of Berlin in 1882, and was so impressed by Droysen's lectures that he decided to study history. He graduated in 1886 and began working at the Prussian State Archive. In 1890, he was commissioned by Siebel to edit the history journal Historische Zeitschrift, and contributed to the development of German history as its chief editor for many years after Siebel's death. In 1901, he became a full professor of modern history at the University of Strasbourg, and in 1906 he moved to the University of Freiburg. In 1907, he published Cosmopolitanism and the Nation-State, which instantly elevated Meinecke's name in the German historical academic world, and he also actively published current affairs commentary in newspapers. In 1914, shortly after the outbreak of World War I, he returned to his alma mater, the University of Berlin. During the war, he associated with politicians such as Bethmann Hollweg. After the war ended with Germany's defeat, the Weimar Republic was established, and he also worked hard to rebuild Germany. His second representative work from this period was "The Idea of State Reason in Modern History" (1924), which was based on his reflections on the war. He retired from the university in 1928, but around the time the Nazis took power in 1933, he came under increasing pressure and was forced to resign as chairman of the National Historical Committee and editor of the Historische Zeitschrift. His third representative work from this period was "The Rise of Historicism" (1936), which examined modern historicism. After Germany's surrender in 1945, he taught at the occupied University of Berlin, and when the Free University of Berlin was founded in 1948, he was recommended as its first president.

He is the greatest modern German historian who inherited Ranke's orthodox historiography, and experienced the historical upheavals of the founding and end of Bismarck's Second Reich and the collapse of Hitler's Third Reich, imprinting them on his own research. The new theory of ideal-based political history that appears in his masterpieces has made Meinecke's name immortal.
