Ultramarine (English spelling) Ultramarine Blue

Ultramarine (English spelling) Ultramarine Blue
One of the names of paint colors. Since the Middle Ages, a blue pigment has been made by crushing the natural mineral lapis lazuli. Natural lapis lazuli is found in Central Asia and the Middle East, and was extremely expensive in Europe. In 1824, the French government encouraged the invention of an alternative artificial pigment, and in 1826 J. Guimet, followed by L. Gmelin and others, came up with a synthesis method. The artificial pigment is composed of a double salt of sodium aluminum silicate and sodium sulfide, Na 10 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 , Na 4 S 2 , and has a slightly reddish blue color. With the same composition, it is possible to create paints with slightly different hues depending on the processing method. As an oil paint, it is usually available in light and deep colors. It is transparent and has good covering power, and is weak against acids but stable against alkalis and sulfide gases.
