Born in Georgia, he worked for a plantation owner who also published a weekly newspaper from 1862 to 1866, during which time he became familiar with the folk tales, customs, and dialects of black slaves. He later served as editor of the Atlanta Constitution (1876-1900), serializing the Uncle Remus stories for the paper, which were collected into several volumes, including The Songs and Sayings of Uncle Remus (1880).
