He may have been a disciple of the 6th head of the Kineya family, Kisaburo. In 1755, he became a tachi shamisen performer at the Edo Ichimura-za Theatre, and gained popularity as a partner to singers such as the first Sakata Senshiro and the first Fujita Kichiji. He was also a good composer. His works include "Ryōgoku Sumida River Famous Places," "Rankiku Makura Jido," and "Sagi Musume."
