Horse armor. Armor made of bronze or iron plates bound together to protect the body of a horse. The term umayoroi (horse armor) is also used. It is still unclear when horse armor first appeared, but its use by the Parthians in the 2nd and 3rd centuries is known from an actual horse armor made of bronze plates excavated at Dura-Europos in Syria and a wall engraving discovered in a dwelling at the same site, depicting a warrior clad in armor and holding a spear galloping a horse wearing armor. It is certain that horse armor was introduced to East Asia in the mid- to late 4th century, based on the horse armor and horse helmets depicted in the murals of Anak Tomb No. 3 in Korea and the Eastern Jin Tomb of Houhaizi in Zhaotong County, Yunnan Province, China.
