Art of the Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties

Japanese: 魏晋南北朝美術 - ぎしんなんぼくちょうびじゅつ（英語表記）Wèi Jìn nán běi cháo měi shù

The Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, sandwiched between the Qin and Han dynasties and the Sui and Tang dynasties that built great empires, were a time of division, except for a very short period during the Western Jin dynasty, which reunited the country, and especially after the Jin dynasty moved south and established the Eastern Jin dynasty in Jiankang (Nanjing), it split into the Northern Dynasty of the Hu people and the Southern Dynasty of the Han people, which stood in opposition to each other. Therefore, the art of this period is clearly divided into the art of the Northern Dynasties and the art of the Southern Dynasties, reflecting the different personalities of the ruling Hu and Han peoples, and the differences in climate and environment between the north and south. However, due to the rise of the aristocratic class as a cultural powerhouse and the new influx of Buddhist culture from the west, the art of this period took on a unique appearance that differed from the previous Han dynasty.

大帝国を築いた秦･漢と隋･唐の間にはさまれた魏晋南北朝は，天下を再統一した西晋のごくわずかの期間を除けば，分裂の時代であり，とくに晋が南遷して建康(南京)に東晋を建ててからは，胡族の北朝と漢族の南朝に分かれ相対立した。したがってこの時代の美術は，統治者である胡･漢両民族の性格の違いや，南北の気候風土の差を反映して，はっきりと北朝美術と南朝美術に二分される一方，文化のにない手として貴族階級が台頭したこと，また新たに西方から仏教文化が流入したことによって，前代の漢と異なる独自の様相を呈した。
