A semi-settled agricultural and pastoral people who live mainly in the KwaZulu-Natal province in the eastern part of South Africa. The population is estimated at about 9 million. They belong to the Nguni people of the Southern Bantu language group, and are closely related to the Swazi and Xhosa peoples in terms of language and culture. They were a clan of Nguni people who are said to have migrated from the north in the 15th century, but in the first half of the 19th century, under King Shaka, they organized military corps based on age groups and built a powerful kingdom of conquest. In 1838, they were defeated by the Boers and driven north. The basic unit of social organization is the clan, each of which consists of several patrilineal households and is under the rule of an elder chief. In the 1970s, a self-governing government was established in Zululand (KwaZulu) as a result of government policy. The Inkatha Freedom Party is supported as a political organization of the Zulu people.
