1730‐94 A military officer who served as an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was originally an officer in the Prussian Army, and served in the General Staff. In 1777, he traveled to America, where he trained Continental Army soldiers in winter quarters at Valley Forges. He was recognized by General Washington and appointed major general and inspector general. He used his experience in the Prussian General Staff to contribute to the organization and training of the Continental Army, and the army training manuals he created were called the "Blue Book" and were long respected.
