A military officer who served as an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was originally an officer in the Prussian Army, and served in the General Staff. In 1777, he traveled to America, where he trained Continental Army soldiers in winter quarters at Valley Forges. He was recognized by General Washington and appointed major general and inspector general. He used his experience in the Prussian General Staff to contribute to the organization and training of the Continental Army, and the army training manuals he created were called the "Blue Book" and were long respected. After the war, he became an American citizen and lived in New York.

アメリカ独立戦争において大陸軍の将校として活躍した軍人。元来はプロイセン軍の将校で参謀本部などに勤務した。1777年アメリカに渡り,バレー・フォージュで冬営中の大陸軍兵士の訓練にあたり,総司令官ワシントンに認められ,少将,検閲総監に任命された。プロイセン軍参謀本部の経験を生かして,大陸軍の組織・訓練に貢献し,彼の作成した陸軍操典は〈ブルー・ブック〉と呼ばれて長く尊重された。戦後アメリカ市民となり,ニューヨークに住む。
