Toshiko Kanzawa

Children's literature author. Born in Fukuoka City. Real name Toshi Furukawa. As a child, she lived in Hokkaido and Karafuto as the daughter of a mining engineer. Graduated from Bunka Gakuin. In 1960 (Showa 35), she published "Chibikko Kamu no Bouken" (The Adventures of Little Kamu), set in the north of Japan and based on her experiences as a young girl, in "Haha no Tomo" magazine. It attracted attention as a children's story with a rich narrative quality. Since then, in addition to fairy tales that vividly depict the sensibilities of young children, she has written large-scale fantasies and autobiographical novels. Her representative works include "Naughty Otter Rocco" (1968), "Kuma no Ko Woof" (1969), the long fantasy novel "Gin no Honoo no Kuni" (1972), which depicts a world where animals fight, "Nagare no Hotori" (1976, Japan Children's Writers Association Award), and "Inai Inai Baaya" (1978, Noma Children's Literature Award, Japan Literature Association Award). "Woof the Little Bear" is a masterpiece of children's stories that has been reprinted more than 100 times since its first edition in 1969, and was published in a revised new edition in 2001 (Heisei 13). There are also 10 books of "Woof the Little Bear Picture Book" (1979-84). Other works include "Baba the Duckling" (1974, Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award), "Snow is Coming?" (1980, Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award), "Sky-colored Egg" (1985), the mythical fantasy "The Swan of Taran" (1989, Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award Grand Prize), and children's poetry books such as "Good Night, See You Tomorrow" (1988, Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award) and "Congratulations Are galore" (1991, Japan Children's Song Award). Four books of "Baba the Duckling" have been published as the "Baba-chan" series by 1984. In 1994, she published the 5-volume "Kamizawa Toshiko Collection" (Iwaya Sazanami Literary Award, Roadside Stone Literary Award). She also published "I Never Thought I'd Become a Grandmother" (1999), which tells the story of her life and the background to the creation of her works. In 1996, she received the Mobil Children's Culture Award.
