White iron

Korean literary critic. His real name was Baek Se Cheol. He came to Japan in 1931 and graduated from Tokyo Higher Normal School (later Tokyo University of Education). He wrote poetry for a time in his youth, but from 1935 he devoted himself to criticism and the study of modern literature, and spent the next 50 years walking alongside the Korean literary scene. Before liberation he worked as a journalist for newspapers and magazines, and after liberation he became a professor at Chung-Ang University in 1955. He has also served as chairman of the Korean headquarters of the International PEN Club and has been involved in a wide range of social activities. His two-volume History of New Korean Literary Thought (1947-49) was the first comprehensive history of modern Korean literature, and its objective description and wealth of material still stand out today.

韓国（大韓民国）の文芸評論家。本名は白世哲。1931年渡日し、東京高等師範学校（後の東京教育大学）を卒業。若いころ一時期、詩も書いたが、35年からは評論と近代文学研究に専念し、以後約50年間を韓国の文学界とともに歩んだ。解放前は新聞雑誌の記者生活、解放後は韓国において55年以降中央大学教授。国際ペンクラブ韓国本部委員長も務めたり幅広い社会的活動をしている。『朝鮮新文学思潮史』2巻（1947～49）は朝鮮最初の近代文学通史であり、客観的叙述と資料の豊かさにおいて今日でも光を失っていない。
