A French labor movement leader. He joined the union movement as a shoe manufacturing worker, and distinguished himself by his ability to organize and lead demonstrations. He became secretary-general of the National Federation of Leather Workers in 1899 and the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) in 1902. He led large-scale strikes such as the national strike demanding an eight-hour workday in 1806 and the construction workers' strike in 1908, and was one of the proposers of the Amiens Charter, making him a symbol of syndicalism. Under his leadership, the General Confederation of Labor developed by organizing unskilled workers in civil engineering, agriculture, forestry, and other fields, as well as civil servants, and also achieved a shift from a skilled trade union movement to a more popular industrial union movement.

フランスの労働運動指導者。靴製造労働者として組合運動に参加，示威行動などの組織･指揮に手腕を発揮，頭角を現し，1899年全国皮革労連書記長，1902年労働総同盟(CGT)書記長に就任した。06年の8時間労働要求全国統一スト，08年の建築労連ストなどの大規模ストを指導したほか，アミアン憲章提案者の一人として，サンディカリスムの象徴的存在となった。労働総同盟は，その指導のもとに，土木，農林などの非熟練労働者および公務員の組織化を進めて発展し，また熟練工中心の職能別組合運動から，より大衆的な産業別組合運動への転換を果たした。
