1874‐1922 A French labor movement leader. He joined the union movement as a shoe manufacturing worker, and distinguished himself by his ability to organize and lead demonstrations. He became secretary-general of the National Federation of Leather Workers in 1899 and the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) in 1902. He led large-scale strikes such as the national strike demanding an eight-hour workday in 1806 and the construction workers' strike in 1908, and was one of the proposers of the Amiens Charter, making him a symbol of syndicalism. Under his leadership, the General Confederation of Labor developed by organizing unskilled workers in civil engineering, agriculture, forestry, and other fields, as well as civil servants, and also achieved a shift from a skilled trade union movement to a more popular industrial union movement.
